Bed Head - Small Talk

Blah Blah Blah...

That's actually the slogan associated with this Bed Head product, I'm not actually dismissing it!

In fact, after several days' use of this product, I would recommend it to anyone who has a hair type similar to my own (fine, a bit fluffy at the ends, and in desperate need of a volumising lift).

Bizarrely, there appear to be no directions as to how to use this product. I took a chance and applied a generous amount to my damp hair before blow drying it. I'm still not sure if that's what I was supposed to do, so if anyone can enlighten me I would very much appreciate it. However, so far it seems to have worked...

Did it provide a beautiful mane that cascaded down my shoulders like a movie star?

Erm...no!

So, I probably would not say 'Small Talk' did what it says it should on the tin, but it did make my hair feel softer and less knotted, which it usually does as the day goes by.

Also, it has a very sweet blueberry smell to it that certainly can seem a bit sickly - you can smell it all day. BUT, it's not too bad, and certainly smells better than most other products. It will certainly capture the attention of that guy you've got your eye on, as his super sniffing snout won't be able to ignore that pleasant smell that wafts by as you walk past! (Remember: you may have to smell it all day but he doesn't!)

Loula's verdict: Recommended! It's worth a buy if you want a product to soften your locks and supply an attractive smell to your barnet! It's also a very cute purple bottle that brightens up your dressing table...

Loula's Tip: Don't purchase this product from your hair salon! It will cost a fortune!! Instead, get it from eBay. I managed to nab two for the price of one.

Don't buy this product if you are expecting miracles!!

The Inbetweeners Movie - Review

*** Spoilers Alert ***

Hurrah!  The film we have all been waiting for, and anticipating, for so long is finally here!

Yes, there was much scepticism that a film would not match up to the classically cringe-worthy show about four teenagers who are very uncool, but incredibly hilarious.

So, was it any good?  (I hear you cry!)

Yes.  In my opinion, it was.  It just seemed like an extended episode from the series; which I suppose it was really.  And where better to set the scene than on a lads' holiday in Malia (or Magaluf, apparently, as most of it was filmed there...)

So, it started with that awfully moody 'mare, Carli, breaking up with Simon (so they did get together at the end of series 3 then) as she considered the distance for them while they are uni would be a problem...and she was going on a girls' holiday...  Slut!

Of course, the lads then come up with the plan to go on their own holiday.  God knows why!  Surely they realise by now that they are each a liability to themselves, let alone the rest of the world.

However, it happens, so off they go.

Now, you may think that Neil's body-popping dancing, Jay's vulgar names for lady parts, Simon's stalker streak, and Will's...well just being Will...would be a bit much for a one hour and fifteen minute film (yes, short, I know!), but it's not. They are all accentuated brilliantly!

As a girl, I did not like the gross-out moments, such as when someone is vomiting, there is a pooh in the bidet, and a character gets Jay's pooh on his nose (even if he did deserve it).

But, the good parts outweighed those moments; such as Jay being bullied by a young boy and then throwing him in the pool, the comedic group dancing, Simon swimming to the shore from the party boat, but drowning halfway there and having to be air-lifted out of the water, and of course all of the boys finding love...sort of...

Yes, these are just to name a few of the genius moments that occur in the film that was worth the wait.

Loula's Verdict: Recommended!  Go see it!  Brilliant!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (Review)

** Spoilers Alert **

The much anticipated, and somewhat dreaded, finale of the Harry Potter saga has finally arrived.  With many of us growing up with the boy wizard, a stable figure throughout our lives from childhood to adulthood, it has proven to be a very emotional journey for everyone involved.

First of all, however, I must give credit where credit is due: the 3D effects for this film were possibly the best I have ever seen.  Unlike HP and the Half Blood Prince the entire movie was set in 3D.  It was worth having those big heavy glasses weighing down my nose (I had my usual glasses on underneath also) for two hours.  Bravo.

Let me just confirm that this is a somewhat epic review of the film, which is probably more of a summary.  Stick with it...

So, the movie started where we left off.  Dobby is brown bread (cockney rhyming slang for 'dead').

Anyone who had seen the previous movie (and had not read the books) would, rightly so, take this as a sign of things to come.  An omen, if you will.  If a lovable elf can be killed off, then no one is safe...

Not even you, Potty!

So, after this reminder of doom, it was a journey back to Hogwarts that included facing the goblins at Gringotts (who cannot be fooled by Hermione posing as Bellatrix LeStrange!) and convincing Dumbledore's brother that Albus was a trustworthy man/wizard.  Poor guy's only been dead five minutes and his brother is slagging him off.

Of course, it was not just Harry & Chums making their way to Hogwarts - there was also Voldemort leading his own posse to the castle.  With possession of the Elder Wand, he clearly thought he could not be defeated.

Oh Voldz, you can be so naive...

However, once Harry was back at Hogwarts, he was greeted by his defenders (mainly the students from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff), as well as a warm welcome from the current headmaster...Snape.

I jest - of course it was not a warm welcome.  Wands were pointed, Voldy (mentally) egged on students from Slytherin to grab Harry, and Harry was protected by his friend.

That's when Snape disappeared, and the wonderful McGonagall took his place as being in charge.  First thing she did was put a protective barrier over the castle to keep those dark fiends (the Death Eaters, and the Dementors) out.  What a hero.

But this was no time to celebrate Prof. McG's power.

While Harry & Co sought out the last of the horcruxes, it was great to get an insight into the intense discussions between Voldy and Snape.  Vold sussed out that the Elder Wand did not give him enough power.  Why?  Because Snape was the one who killed its last owner (Dumbledore), so now he had to kill Snape to be granted rightful ownership of the wand.  See ya, Snapey!

Snape's death by Voldemort's snake was quite disturbing (even though you didn't see anything).  However, it was the perfect opportunity for Hazza to collect Snape's tears while he lay dying (as you do).

So, fast forward slightly, and you have Potter looking into the memories of one of his most hated nemeses, Snape.  What does he discover?  That Dumbledore was right all along.  (Of course he was!  It's Dumbeldore!)  Snape was trustworthy after all.  He killed Dumbledore to protect Harry.  Why?  Because he was in love with his mother (Harry's mother, not his own...or Dumbledore's!  That would have made it a completely different movie!).

Yes, who knew Snape had a heart, eh?  He loved Lily all his life, and the reason he bullied poor Potter was because he was a walking reminder that she did not reciprocate his affection.  All together now: Awwww!

Snape even adopted the same protronus as Lily (a doe).  However, we'll avoid going down the route of accusing him as being a stalker...

While all this is going on, and the Death Eaters United are attacking Hogwarts, there is always time for hormones to break through.  We had Neville hunting down Luna to confess that he is "mad for her", Ginny screaming at every opportunity when she thinks Harry is a goner (the little minx), and Ron and Hermione reaching their inevitably climactic snog.  The latter was very well done though, and caused a cheer to break through the hearts of everyone watching.

So, with love coursing through the veins of these teenagers, who really needed to sort out their priorities during this difficult time, we finally got to the big fight scene.  Harry vs. Voldemort.

Of course it would be tricky for Harry to obliterate Voldy when he, Harry, possesses one of the horcruxes within him.  However, all is OK, as Voldy kills him anyway, and he ends up in King's Cross station with Dumbledore; who is always on hand to give advice, even when he's six feet under.  It's actually a very beautiful scene.

So, once Dumbledore has helped him out AGAIN, Harry returns.  Pretends to be dead.  Fools Voldemort and the rest of the Death Eater Clan.  Then jumps out of Hagrid's arms (unfortunately, he did not shout 'Boo!') and they have a scrap.

Of course, good conquers evil.

Harry is victorious and destroys Voldemort.  As simple as that.

Happy days.

The End.

However, it's not really the end.  Many people died along the way.  Prof. Lupin and his missus, Tonks, have been murdered; and so has Fred.  Yes, Fred!!  George's twin.  Very upsetting stuff.  Well, you would think so, but unfortunately, and this is my biggest gripe with the movie, his death was brushed over.  Surely Fred deserved a bigger send off than a slight, blink and you'll miss it, dismissal!?

Now, we fast forward again.  Nineteen years in fact.

Everyone is made to look old (quite well, actually) and they all have kids.  Looks like their hormones overruled again.  We are left seeing that Harry has a son that he has named...wait for it...Albus Severus Potter.

Good grief!

The Real End.

Loula's Verdict: The applause from the audience at the end of the movie was very much well deserved.

The State (Covers Band)

After seeing this band last night you wouldn't believe that it was their first gig.

The Struggling Monkey was packed to the rafters with friends, family and the curious, all eagerly awaiting The State's debut performance.

The introduction kicked off with a marvellous rendition of the classic Proud Mary, and if any of the band members were nervous, you would never have guessed.

Amy Barlow sensationally contradicted her petite frame with a big voice, delicately supported by the harmonies of Leanne Lloyd and Ruthy B. Leanne was also on keyboard and modestly wooed the crowd with a beautiful rendition of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way.

However, it was not just the girls who provided the vocals. Chris Jones expertly duetted with Amy whilst stunning the audience with his guitar playing. An exceptional talent that was matched by the wonderfully rhythmic Chris Taylor on drums and, to complete the band, the astounding Richard Doyle on bass guitar.

With fantastic chemistry oozing between the band members, the audience were welcomed to a very atmospheric performance and a superb set-list.

Each song was performed brilliantly and the mixture of songs, ranging from Toto to Adele to Led Zeppelin to The Beatles, meant that there was something for everyone.

It truly was a fantastic night!

The State are next playing at Pelsall Cricket Club on Saturday 18th June 2011.

You can also follow the band on Facebook by clicking here: The State - Covers Band

The band can be contacted for bookings of gigs, as well as being available for weddings, parties and various other functions. (Information for future gigs is available through The State's Facebook page)

Shappi Khorsandi

I saw this comedienne on BBC Three last night for the first time...she is absolutely hilarious.

She's certainly the best comedienne I've seen in a very long time.

Loula's Comedy Rating: ••••
(She lost out on a blob as I wouldn't put her in the same category just yet as John Bishop, Michael McIntyre, Peter Kay or Rhod Gilbert)

Scream 4

A trilogy is always a difficult franchise to master and there are very few movies that are successful in achieving such mastery.

The original Scream is certainly worthy of being considered a classic. It has everything from the chill factor to romance to Super Sid kicking ass. It was a movie that left you checking your cupboards before bed to make sure no surprises were lurking within. It never gets boring no matter how many times you've seen it. Billy and Stu were classic psycho killers who left you chilled to the bone and wanting to hang on to your virginity for as long as possible.

Scream 2 introduced an interesting twist in the form of Billy's mother being the cold blooded killer out for revenge on everyone's favourite victim. The death of Randy was devastating and Cotton's anger pointed all of the suspicion towards him. Only the most super of sleuths would have guessed that Mrs Loomis and Mickey were the killers, and Gale and Dewey's affection for one another offered that light hearted romance that took the edge off slightly from all the murders. Would Sidney ever be safe and free from her constant terror?

That brings us to Scream 3. Who on earth could be left wanting to bump Sid off once and for all? Ahhh, of course...the illegitimate half-brother, Roman, that she never knew she had. Again, we were pampered with the electric affections between Dewey and Gale. At least this time it ended with a proposal once the three protags had once again saved the world from that clutches of Ghostface!

That brings us eleven years later with the fourth instalment, taking it from a trilogy to a...quadrilogy?!? With the third film being more comical than the first two, this movie had the potential to lose its chilling charm if it would follow in its footsteps. You can imagine my relief when it turned out to be just as scary as the original.

There were plenty of murders and each was as surprising as the previous. The characters from the new generation complemented the presence of the original three (Cotton Weary got it right when he said Gale has more lives than a cat) as Emma Roberts played Sidney's cousin Jill. Ghostface came after Sidney and Jill and her friends got caught up in the firing line also. If all bets are off in a trilogy, then anything goes in the fourth instalment. Trust no one and expect the unexpected!

Hayden Panettiere's character, Kirby, is indeed a scene stealer. She expresses comical value with an underlying sense of fear. It's spot on. Emma Roberts is impressive as Sidney's somewhat vulnerable cousin. And as for the original three? Well, let's just say it's good to see them back on the silver screen.

One big let down from the film though? The absence of the song "Red Right Hand" - very disappointing.

Word of advice... Go and see this film! Especially if you are a Scream fan.
